Sporting Footprints Lake Coniston Charity Triathlon

The Challenge

On Saturday 13th June, a team of 9 plus an amazing support crew set off on a Triathlon with a difference. This one started with a 4 hour hike up the ‘Old Man of Coniston’ mountain, which tested the legs a bit especially on the descent. After the hike it was the turn of the upper body and we kayaked across Coniston Water, 2 men to a kayak and of course it ended up getting a bit competitive, Oxford-Cambridge has seen nothing compared to us lot!

Cramping

The final leg of the Triathlon involved 2 laps around a very hilly route, totalling 50 miles and 4200ft elevation. A few of the guys suffered from painful leg cramping which left one of the team flapping around on the road like a fish out of water until the cramping subsided. The whole challenge took around 7 hours and the main reason of course was to raise money for a fantastic charity

Sporting Footprints

Sporting Footprints was set up to raise money for sport, lifestyle and leisure equipment and opportunities  for the families that use Bluebells Holiday home in Hampshire. Bluebells is funded by Sebastian’s Action Trust and is the first purpose built holiday home for families of children with lifelong and life limiting illness. Through challenges and fun days in the last 3 years Sporting Footprints has been able to fund Specialised wheelchairs, sensory equipment, music/art therapy, family days out, dry suits , memorial books, remembrance garden and cinema tickets.
If you would like to sponsor us or any of our team for this challenge you would be allowing us to continue to support these special families.

Tough Mudder Complete!

Last November I entered a team to take part in this May’s Tough Mudder. It was a fantastic day, to say some of the team were a little nervous would be an understatement but by working as a team, a positive ‘can do’ attitude and a good sense of humour got us through. It really is an achievable challenge and I thoroughly recommend you do one. After all its only a bit of mud!

Challenge YOU!

My motivation this year is to try and stay as physically and mentally well as possible after various setbacks last year including 7 months of painful gut issues which affected any exercise I tried to do. I set myself a task of completing a different challenge and something I had never done before each month for 2015 this way when a challenge has been completed I roll into training for the next one keeping motivated and focussed the whole time. In January it was to try and beat my Park Run PB, which I did, February was to run a Brutal Run, March was a double-whammy with a Brutal Duathlon followed by the Reading Half Marathon having only ever ran 11 miles twice before. Lots more totally different challenges for the year ahead, with my eye on something big by 2017.

A lot of people train and lose interest when they haven’t got an end goal in sight. Trying to set a goal or a challenge is so important to give you something to strive for, and when you have reached it aim for another one, keep it rolling, stay focussed, keep feeling good. It doesn’t have to be anything extreme, it may be you just want to run a 5k for the first time, but that feeling when you have smashed your goal and crossed the line needs to be remembered so keep challenging yourself.

A wise person once said “If it doesn’t challenge, you it doesn’t change you”, there are so many events out there from beginners to advanced that there is no excuse to try something new.

I hope this post doesn’t come across as too self-indulgent my aim is to hopefully motivate you to get out there and do something for you!

With my finishers medal and a time of 1:48:35 , not bad for a first go. Still buzzing!

Brutal Run

Last week I did my first Brutal Run which is 10k of mud and short hills. Great fun, and an achievable challenge for anyone looking at doing their first muddy run, see my GoPro video here to hopefully inspire you to sign up and give it a go, great fun…

News just In……Moderation!

Don’t let one bad day/meal/session bring you down. We all have days where we are just not feeling it and the training session is below par or we eat something ‘unhealthy’ and reach for that choccy bar when feeling stressed, the key to it is to not let those negative emotions get in the way of all the positive work you are doing.

Trying to change your lifestyle into a healthy one can be hard so don’t worry about the odd slip up now and again as long as you get back on track and stay focussed.

I personally believe you should never be so restrictive in your diet choices that you are eliminating certain foods groups altogether (unless allergic etc) , being too restrictive can cause stress which in turn can inhibit fat loss.

That age old saying ‘everything in moderation’ although not ground breaking is pretty accurate!

Perfect Posture!

I have recently finished a great course run by Premier Training, namely Postural Analysis and Corrective Exercise. I feel its vitally important for any Personal Trainer who is serious about creating an exercise programme that can truly benefit their clients to carry out some sort of Postural Analysis whether it is a static test or a dynamic one or both. I am yet to see anyone who has the perfect posture, we all seem to have little idiosyncrasies and its important to know what they are before implementing a programme.

I will be using these tests on my clients and I can thoroughly recommend the course.

Be Accountable!

Be Accountable!

So 2015 is under way and if you have a goal for the year one of the best ways of achieving it is to make yourself accountable.
One way of doing this is to write it down on a whiteboard or on a big bit of paper and stick it in a place you will see it daily either at home or work.

Make the goals specific so instead of I want to lose weight, set a target, 1 stone by March. Instead of I’d like to run a 5k at some point, set a target, I want to run a 5k by Feb, mark off the goals throughout the year and see the accomplishments you have made at the end of it all!
